And
now ... the future
Vertical flight will expand as its advantages in
specific applications become apparent. This process has been the path in the past from
early sea rescue duties to todays transportation to offshore oil rigs. Increases in
surface congestion will favor more time saving going by air. Recognition of VTOL advantages in unmanned aerial vehicles is now broadening our military capabilities. Large increases in heavy vertical air lift capacity will open many opportunities for the development of our worlds resources, for the construction of facilities on a larger scale, and open the gateway to expanded capabilities. The decentralization of industry, multiplication of production centers, and suburban sprawl add to the growing application of vertical lift transporting personnel directly to end point locations. Key actions have yet to be put into effect to permit the expansion of vertical lift. Some of these are the installation of heliports at destination locations, the reduction of VTOL aircraft noise when in close proximity to populated areas, and the modulation of high speed flight vibration to allow the use of flight time for productive work. When these developments come into effect, and the improvements possible in maintainability, reliability, performance and safety materialize, use of vertical lift will broaden and in turn provide new benefits to our society.
